Just checked fluid level seems ok.No leakage around it or anything.Damn.Feels like the linkage is still attached at the top of the gearbox.

Hope it is the linkage - if not it could be the selector - Do a search there is quite a lot of info on both problems.

Deffo not linkage.

At the gaerstick all seems well.both cables still attached on top of the gearbox.

looks like the box will have to be dropped. At this stage if I get a half decent offer from a breakers then its gon.Pity the engine is in great shape.

Sorted!

The selector had seized. When I brought it to my local mecchyy he knew what is was straight away.Removed battery and all covers and battery tray.Removed cables from the selector.Removed selector and you could see stright away the rust on the top part.Took out shaft and found that the ridicously small bearings were seized. He gave me a choice here.Try and source a new roller with bearings or remove them complety and adjust the cables.Decided to just remove them and pack with grease.A bit of adjusting later and Bingo.Problem soved for a while anyway.

Just as a side note he said that on theses gearboxes (and he said this thru experience) the selector on these Diesels are the same as a transit (Front wheel drive)Maybe helpful for someone in the future.

PLEASE REMEMBER THIS...

removing the bearings is NOT a permanent soloution.Depending on how you drive and how much you drive the shaft WILL EVNTUALLY WEAR DOWN THE CASING THAT THE SELECTOR SITS IN as the roller bearing has been removed. If you intend to keep the car for any lenght of time it will have to be replaced.

Sorry I didnt make my post clear. The bearings are still in place they had to be freed off and packed with grease.

Hi, I'm pretty new on here, think this is my first post....anyway

My Galaxy has the same problem, can get 3rd, 4th and reverse only...

If I take it to a garage what do I need to tell them needs replacing, the gear selector assembly? Also any ideas roughly how much it's likely to cost??

Hi lobb, your posts sort of in the wrong place, you shouldve started a whole new post, but not to worry. My Gal done exactly the same thing about a year or 2 ago. Read all the posts about it could be the gear box knackered, needs new box etc. In the end a friendly mechanic told me its a common fault for the selector to partially sieze up. So.....get as best access to the top of the box you can (remove the battery and anything else in the way) pop off the selector cables from the gearbox(best not to try and force with the gear stick as this could damage the cables). Spray a whole load of WD40 around the mechanism, then go and have yourself a good load of spinach. After letting it soak for a wee while get your arms in the best you can and just try and work the mechanism free ie up and down and side to side. Be prepared for a few minor hand and arm injuries but could save on a hefty garage bill. This worked for me so hope it does for you.

Thanks! I'll give it a go!
